I would say a Passat TDI, if it didn't only come with a slushbox.  Torque
enough to make it seem fun, and great economy.  I would second the VW line,
if it's new it should be reliable enough.  Though, can't argue the
Honda/Toyota comment.  Go with the Honda though, I think you can get Accords
with a Manual.  If she is prone to wanting the AWD, how about a Subaru
Outback 2.5 XT?  250 HP would be fun when you had to drive it.  How large of
a car does she want?

You might enjoy driving a VW (Golf/Jetta/Passat), but it
wouldn't alleviate her nervousness about a breakdown. For
that, I'd suggest a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry. The Honda
will be more fun to drive.
