Snell M-rated helmets are for single impact and meet minimal
fire resistance standards compared to SA-(special application)
rated helmets, which are rated for multiple impacts (much more
common inside a caged race car) and higher fire resistance
standards (again albit more expected in a competition car, rather
than on spilled motorbike). As for what's acceptable, it depends
upon the sanctioning body. The SCCA requires only M-rated for
Solo 2Autocross (rated as "low-speed") events. All others (Solo
1, which includes Time Trials, Hill Climbs and all wheel to wheel
racing) require an SA helmet. Don't know what the driving schools
and track days require.
