You can get to it from the grill.  you need to bend a coat hanger or other 
stiff wire with a hook on it.   You can actually see the mechanism although 
it is difficult.  I would get somebody to help you by pulling on the 
release handle and then you can watch the passenger side through the grill 
move to see what things look like.  Then look at the other side to find the 
right parts.  You will need to hook the lever and pull it towards the 
grill.  I was successful at this when I clamped the cable behind the 
hydraulic fluid reservoir.
