[s-cars] Smoke pouring out pipes - mechanic wants to rebuild

All,

Since making it back from the 12k mile road trip, the beast hasn't been in
good shape.  At first the smoke was only coming out of the rear tailpipes
intermittently, now we are full on all the time and, not only is it
embarrassing, but worrying me about the next step.

My mechanic wants to do a rebuild and replace the bearings, gaskets and
rings.  He is having trouble sourcing the parts in the Chicago-land area.
He was also looking at replacing the engine completely.

Is there a kit that has the necessaries for this job?
Sources for them?
Reason for a second opinion?
