so now with a fresh fuel pump and a new fuel pump relay, we still have
the same no start symptoms. however, we have verified it will run if
it ever gets started.
how did we do that? we tested to see if we had spark (we did) and got
the car sputtering on ether. a second shot allowed it to actually run.
we had the car idling for 30 minutes. I'm pretty sure the ether was
long gone. <g>
still no codes with VAG-COM.
so we've got fuel and the car will run, assuming we can get it
started. why can't we get it started?
it turns over
it runs and appears to make power (will verify tomorrow w/ test drive)
it just won't start (without ether)
replaced fuel pump
replaced fuel pump relay
replaced fuel filter
unplugged MAF (runs better with it plugged in, so it appears to work)
performed SJM output test (everything clicks and wiggles)
tried a different ECU with same results
anything else I might look at?
thanks!

Steve-
In my case, where I told you I replaced my FP to no avail like yourself
(the one I offered you heh heh), the culprit was the regulator on the
rail. $49 and 25 seconds later and voila.
HTH, good luck.
