>From what I've seen, we see two types of Castrol Syntec in the US. One
version is made in the US, and the other imported from Europe (I've seen it
from both Germany and Belgium on the bottles). The 5W40 I use in my A6 4.2
is the Euro formula, and is supposedly great stuff in terms of quality, and
meets VW 502 00 and 505 00 lubricant specs. It's also what Audi filled the
car with originally at the factory. The 0W30 Syntec is also from Europe, and
also meets the VW engine warranty specs. Both of these grades can be
difficult to find (I've been getting the 5W40 at my local AutoZone, but
haven't seen it anywhere else). The other grades are US made and generally
widely available (Walmart, Pep Boys, etc), and supposedly "inferior"
compared to the same grade of M1. There is also no mention of these grades
meeting the VW specifications on the Castrol website either. This subject
has been hammered to death in the AudiWorld forums, so a quick search over
there may provide some more info.

I'll chime i here,
I use Castrol over the Mobil oil b/c it runs cooler. I can tell a
difference between the two 5W oils on the temp gauge in the car.
Also, being a 2 wheel enthusiast Castrol does some serious R&D on
their oils for their bikes and I assume this is carried over to the 4
wheel stuff too!
It's all personal preference though. Which bottle do you like, which
is cheaper, which is available. I have never been a Mobil fan(Exxon)
since Valdez.
