Thompson;
When my fan started to wobble, the play was in the viscous clutch, not the
bearing - replacing the clutch cured the wobble.
The bearing on the clutch drive pulley may be replaceable - I don't recall
too clearly but I was thinking of replacing this during my last T-belt
change and concluded I needed the assembly. That may have been because I
didn't want to risk having the car down if I futzed up the bearing R&R;
memory fades. Audi only sells the complete assembly for $$$$. If this
bearing goes you'll know it - this is a major pulley in the serpentine belt
system.

Subject: [s-cars] Viscous fan clutch bearing - replacement?
Is there a bearing on the viscous fan clutch that can be
replaced? I think I can remember swapping in a new one on my
ex-//S4 back when a few years ago. The fan clutch on my //S6 is
a bit wobbly back and forth and not spinning that fast when you
first start it up (cold) and really spins about the same when
it hot. Maybe I need to replace the viscous clutch at the same
time too? What's the part # on this?
Other item that the Audi gods inflicted upon my soul is the AC
compressor knocking starting at 150k. Toggle the AC on and rev
up to about 2-3000 rpm there is a constant knocking with rpms.
Toggle it off, the knocking goes away. Magic. Anyway, the mech
at the shop here at work said to start with a new viscous fan
clutch.
TIA, Thompson
