Sam, My money is on the CV joint at the front of the prop shaft. The grease
dries out and it starts making metallic clanking noises when you take off at
WOT in first gear and a little in second. In higher gears and speeds, you
cannot hear it. Unfortunately this part cannot be purchased separately. You
may be able to pack some fresh CV grease in there and be ok. I have not done
this myself, but have had it done on the 95 avant by a local mechanic. The
prop shaft service requires removal of the exhaust, but you probably knew
that already.
