i had the same thing happen to me last month.  i repaired
the pedal with a couple of sheetmetal screws.  franco has
an excellent webpage with pictures describing the fix:

make sure you don't drop the bushings behind the carpet
when you take the pedal assembly out.  i dropped one and
had to fish for it under the carpet.  luckily it didn't
fall all the way down.

takes about 5 minutes to do.
