Regarding the value of "flash to pass" -- I do not even both trying to do
this anymore.
Maybe it is a geographical demographic thing, but in my experience most
people do not make any effort to clear the passing lane if I flash and many
seem to get peeved and decide to punish me by keeping the passing lane
blocked for a longer period of time. I have driven a fair portion of our
fine USA and I have yet to find an area that appeared to appreciate the
practice.
About all I do anymore is briefly turn my lights off to let a trucker know
he is clear to pull in or out of his lane.
Maybe flash to pass works on the secret Autobahns hidden somewhere else in
the USA, but I have not witnessed it.
As far as headlight brightness, am I the only person who gets blinded by
the reflection off of road signs with my old-technology euros? There is
such a thing as too bright and too much light, even with a well controlled
beam pattern.
As far as driving only with low beams, that will get you a freezer or two
full of venison round these parts. A two hour night trip last week had
near misses with eleven deer and a twenty minute drive home from working a
bit late a day or two later resulted in avoidance from five of Ohio's best
corn fed deer. With only low beams in use the deer would literally jump
into the side of the car.
My $0.02,
Eric
