The AR was plug and play, simple as that. i did have to go in and set the aim with basic settings via scan tool, but they self level just fine. They must come from an AR, not an A6 of the same vintage.

  when I was selling Audis definitely were bixenon. I think the very late C5 chassis
  A6s also had bixenon- I know the RS6 had it- that was an '03?

  How did you deal with the auto-leveling system- did you install the whole shebang?
  That would be a PITA to install, although you have a shop to do it in and the tools.
