I had excellent results with LEDs, but any old red LED will not
necessarily work well.

I used LEDs of 3mm size, 3000mcd brightness, and 640nm peak wavelength.
I forget the series resistor value, but it was, as I recall, on the
order of 3k ohms.  (3000mcd is pretty bright.)
