Mine started a couple of winters ago, though I didn't realize it until
that spring when I started driving with the windows down again. The
noise is not the clicking, card in the spokes, type sound. I equate it
more to the sound of straight cut gears. I think mine may have been a
result of one 18" snow storm when I was tooling around at 2am, and after
a little too much throttle while turning onto a street, I ended up with
the front end up on a snow bank. Twenty minutes of digging the front
end out with my hands didn't help and finally resorted to rocking the
car back and forth between 1st and reverse for a few minutes before it
finally extricated itself. Of course the countless miles of donuts in
various parking lots I'm sure had nothing to do with it. Anyway, it's
been 20k-25k miles and it's no worse.
