[s-cars] oil consumption

I cannot explain this phenomenon, but I've seen it firsthand:

My '91 200q consumed oil differently depending on whether I was using
M1 10W30 or 15W50, and definitely behaved differently (lots of lifter
clatter and more consumption) with Castrol Syntec 5W50.

Our old A4 1.8tq was fine on M1 10W30, but other than maybe one oil
change, after 5k miles, it ran exclusively on M1 0W40 (black cap
"euro" formula).

Finally, our NB 2.0 did not like M1 at all- ran M1 10W30, had quite a
bit of oil consumption. Tried 0W40, no different. Did not try 15W50.
Talked to my mechanic, tried Castrol Syntec 10W30, reduction in oil
consumption by a good 33-50%. However, this is prior to engine
replacement- the engine was replaced for excessive oil consumption.
After replacement, ran the oil the dealer put in for 1k miles,
switched to Castrol Syntec 10W30, practically zero consumption ever
since. I cannot say that M1 caused any issues, I think the car simply
had a defective engine- something didn't seat properly and oil
consumption got progressively worse, with about 2 qts. every 1k being
the worst prior to engine replacement.

The STi has been running on M1 10W30, no issues, although I will
probably try either 5W30 or 0W40 next fill just to see how it does-
factory spec is something like 0W30 or 5W30.

The V70R is running on M1 10W30. Need to change the oil shortly,
second change, only 6k miles so far.
