After about 3 years of lurking, I feel it is finally time for me to post. I
have good news for you.
First, you probably don't need the whole kit. Most likely you can get by with
an O-ring or two, because the O-rings under the X-plugs at the top of the PS
pump tend to dry out. You get a "free" O-ring with each X-plug.
If all you need is the X-plug or its O-ring, that does appear to be a
dealer-only part. My local dealer sold me one (part 026-145-541) a few months
ago for $4.92. It had to be ordered, however, taking about two weeks to
arrive, and the parts guy gave me the impression that nobody had ever ordered
one before, because he seemed very surprised that it came in a small black
plastic bag when I picked it up.
If you *do* need more than a couple O-rings, you will be better off buying the
rebuild kit. I don't know if you can buy the kit for the AAN engine PS pump
(035-198-049A, if I'm reading the FA correctly) from places other than
dealers, but that isn't necessarily a problem.
Here's a little way to save money: The rebuild kit for the NF engine's PS
pump (used on the 1989-1991 100, among other vehicles) comes with a bunch of
the O-rings that fit the X-plugs on your AAN engine's PS pump (I think 8 to be
exact), as well as a few other O-rings that may or may not fit your pump.
You can buy the NF rebuild kit from Autohaus AZ (http://www.autohausaz.com)
for $16.48 (part number 026-198-049). For comparison, my local dealer quoted
something like $50. Pentosin CHF-11S is only about $16 a liter from them,
too. I buy most of my Audi parts from Autohaus AZ because both their prices
and their service are pretty good, so I'm surprised they are never mentioned
on this list.
