Michael and others,

If indeed you have fallen victim to the dreaded pinion whine which affected
so many '92 and some '93 S4's, the good news is that you can hammer away!
Just as others have reported hammering on their galled 1st gears, I hammered
for a good 25k mi on my bad pinion bearing tranny. Expecting to see
disastrous results on teardown, one was hardpressed to even see the problem.
The only indication of a problem was the pinion bearing race had small pits
in it. Made one hell of a noise for what looked to be such a small issue
with the bearing. I replaced the tranny with a late model S6 unit. Bottom
line, I think the bad pinion bearings could go literally forever as long as
you can live with the noise. HTH,

Chad
