And a stuck thermostat it was. Right now it is sitting in a in a pot of 
boiling water @ 99ºC, shut closed. Larry, you're one lucky guy that it 
happened not too far away from my house.

The new thermostat looks rather bizarre. Its moving disk is now
completely encased in rubber. I boiled both of them side by side in a
pot on. The new one opened at ca. 90ºC, as expected.

The car is now back together. Thanks for your input, guys!
