[s-cars] Coolant in the oil sump ????

I had this same thing happen to me in college on an American V-8. I felt as
though after running coolant through all my bearing surfaces and oil
passages I couldn't trust the bearings to hold up much longer, plus after
just a couple of hours of running like this the engine became hard to crank;
so I rebuilt the motor. Maybe I was paranoid but I just couldn't see how I
would ever convince myself all the coolant was out of the oil passages.

Yes it is the head gasket.
Look at the underside of the oil filler cap. The coolant makes the oil
turn into brownish glop.
Maybe a good time for a timing belt, h2o pump etc. whilst you're at it.
IIRC I supplied all parts to my mechanic and the whole head gasket /
timing belt job cost I think $700. Since I figure it had to take more
him more than a day and I didn't have to get dirty, this was a bargain.
He broke his breaker bar on the crank bolt too.
And since a head gasket replacement (be sure to get a steel one) is
trouble enough, no need to remove the transmission.
