[s-cars] Tranny Advice

I had a very bad experience with my transmission rebuild. The first shop I
went to claimed that they could handle it, but (after taking it apart and
not knowing how to re-assemble it) instead sent it to German Transaxle in
Oregon. I was unhappy with the cost and the time so I insisted that it was
put back together so that I could take it to another shop. To make a very
long story short...German Transaxle intentionally re-assembled it
incorrectly (This is what the second shop found out after calling German
Trans and talking to someone who knew about it).
The car was tied up for about 10 weeks the first time, and another 8 weeks
for the second shop to sort it all out. The mechanic at the second shop
did a good job but it has never really never shifted the same again. It's
OK, but not that super smooth German 5-speed that I used to have. He
should have replaced the synchros but he chose not to. ;-|
so... after all that, my advice is to find a transmission guy who can not
only the skill but the time and interest to do a good job. I've rebuilt a
few 5 speeds out of American cars. It's not rocket science. You just
have to pay attention and RTFM.
Good luck
-Bill

Steve,
When I looked into this a couple of years ago I came to the conclusion it
would be better to buy a used trans from someone who has switched to a
6-speed. Preferably get one from a June/95 or later S6 with the wider first
gear. There is a lot of info at Charlie' site,
http://www.elektro.com/~audi/ and also lots of info in the archives. If you
do have it rebuilt my understanding is there are a number of specific tools
required that are available only to the dealer. That's the word I got from
a local mechanic who was the transmission man at the dealer and now has his
own shop. He wasn't willing to rebuild mine without the tools. I am still
hanging in there with my original trans - it had a pinion bearing whine
which seems to have subsided (the Audi Gods will get me for that statement).
What is the problem with your transmission?
