Guys,
According to my German brochures in 3/94 three version of the S2 are
available (based on Audi 80, 4 version of the S4 are available (based on
Audi 100), and the V8 is already called an Audi A8 with 2 engine choices.
In 4/94 the A6/S6 intro brochure states that out of the Audi 100 the A6 was
developed.
The S6 is available in 4 versions and the A6 in 4 versions. They claim 41
different versions total between body style, cylinders, power, and comfort.
It states that the full catalog of models will be available in juni 94.
Just my $.S4 cents :)

The S2 had it's first model year as '91, but were actually first built
in '90. Since we are guessing at the origin of "S4", I would think
that it was Audi's way of telling us this was a special version car,
based on the C4 chassis, making it an S4. Then when Audi decided to
update the 100 to an A6, keeping the name S4, while having an A6 just
sounds stupid so they named the new S and S6. My $0.02
