[s-cars] Air Filters

So a clean K&N is the best for performance, but one of the worse for
clean air. Conversely the best for clean air is also the worst for
performance. So it doesn't seem that there is a magic filter that gives
you both. When they get dirty they all sux. I think that it is a moot
point that it took the K&N 20 ish min, seems like they all get really
bad quickly looks like a log scale once they clog, or even exponential,
so it seems cleaning and or replacing a filter often is important. Or
am I missing something. I also suspect that the time to clog is
directly proportional to the surface area of the filter, I mean I would
think you can predict from one type of filter to the next based on the
relative difference in area of filter media, but I am guessing here.
I have heard this particle size issue before, a study of K&N filter on
mining equipment and issues with premature failure of the piston rings.
But I have never seen issues with a street or race car. Race cars
motors don't run long enough to have issues, and the K&N is much better
than running nothing, witch is the other option, but the best for
performance when running something. I keep my filters clean and the
more you clean them the less particles they trap, but also the less
restrictive they are, from what I have read. I personally have never
seen ill effects on any of my motors when taking them apart, any one
else have any other data or experience to suggest otherwise?
