Ah why do I now associate you with the Hapersized La Fin Du Monde:)? 
Oh that was some kind of bottle.
But I digress,
...  FWIW just having had my mechanic do a pre sfest head gasket I can
report that he charged me US$1224  BUT
that included also doing a timing belt h2o pump AND 
I supplied ALL parts.  
Having done my own turbo / EM install some time ago, thus knowing some
of what he had to take apart, I thought this amount quite a bargain
and got out of there as fast as I could before he changed his mind. 
He was starting to ramble on about how hard it was and how his breaker
bar broke on the crank bolt etc..
OTOH I think he likes working on my stupid sleeper fast car.
