Jonathan,
I have retrofitted Euro HID projectors (off a wrecked 740i) into my car. 
They utilise a standard D2S bulb and a Hella ballast off any car. In my 
case off a wrecked American C5 A6 with HID.

The 740i projector is smaller in DIA than the HID projector off an 
American A6 that I used to have in my car. It also has a somewhat lesser 
light output than the awesome large A6 projectors. However, the smaller 
Bimmer projectors are easier to integrate in our headlights. You don't 
have to saw off the semi-round dimple on the projector and to bend 
inwards the ear for the central bolt on the pattern setting inner mask.
Also, for the the A6 projectors I had to fabricate two adapter brackets 
coz the mounting holes are very different in the C4 and the C5 low beam 
projectors.

With the smaller 740i projectors I managed to get away with just 4 M4 
studs, bent like this:

This brilliant idea was suggested to me by Bob Pastore. As well as the 
whole idea of retrofitting the C5 A6 HID projectors into my headlights.
