Joe,
I've been thinking the same thing... I read a test in Sport Compact that 
wrung out 6 units on the dyno.  Their winner was the Blitz SBC i-D.  It was an 
online article, and unfortunately, it failed to give the dyno specific figures.  
One of the items they tested was a ball valve built from plumbing parts.  
Their claim was that it did "very well" but without the data, it's kind of hard to 
draw conclusions.

Anyway... my thought was to give a manual controller a try.
