[s-cars] Fuel Pump

S-men,
Ever been to Hinton, Alberta?  Well, that's where my fuel pump decided to pack it in on my way to Jasper for a little skiing.  Left the car in Hinton, ordered a pump to come by bus from Edmonton, rented a van, went skiing, three days later, still no pump in the Greyhound depot in Hinton.  At any rate, a couple of whacks with a mallet and a little rest got the old pump working and car back in Edmonton.  Now, once I chase down the missing fuel pump I will tear the old one out and install the new.  What is the best procedure to remove and install the pump without that special VAG tool for this purpose?  Any help greatly appreciated.
