[s-cars] Fuel Pump

S-men,
Well, I finally got my new pump installed - it was a nasty job - finished about 12:30 last night. I tried everything to undo the clips to pull the pump out of the basket - as Robert Myers says you have to work by feel. I ended up pulling the whole basket by putting a 2-foot crow bar against the notch in the basket and giving it a whap. I reinstalled it the same way. I can see it would be so much simpler with the special tool.
Thanks to Robert, Fred, Dave and Kent for your help.
Bob, pumped up and running in Edmonton

Once you find the right combination you don't need to remove the basket. There are two springy plastic retainer clips which can be sprung open and then the pump itself just lifts out of the basket. It only took me about four hours of laying on the floor of the trunk with my arm elbow deep into the fuel tank feeling blindly for the clips to actually find them. Fortunately I was doing this on a warm September day rather than a frigid January day. I can send a picture showing one of the clips if it would be helpful.

Yes, I've been to lovely downtown Hinton, Bob. Very scenic. Fabulous place.
Don't know how you tore yourself away to go to the seedy Jasper area.

As for the fuel pump removal, on some cars you can turn the basket out by
hand, on some cars you need the tool. I had to take my '91 200q (same fuel
pump mount as the UrS) to the dealer to use the tool - I couldn't get it out
by hand and none of my improvised tools worked; it was just too tight.

Get the tank as empty as you can, wear neoprene gloves, use non-sparking
tools, and use a "cold" light source (fluorescent trouble light or battery
powered light). It gets kind of fumey after you've been stuck in the trunk
for a while with the tank opened up, so keep the cursing sub-vocal.

    Good luck!

    S-men,
Ever been to Hinton, Alberta? Well, that's where my fuel pump decided to
pack it in on my way to Jasper for a little skiing. Left the car in Hinton,
ordered a pump to come by bus from Edmonton, rented a van, went skiing,
three days later, still no pump in the Greyhound depot in Hinton. At any
rate, a couple of whacks with a mallet and a little rest got the old pump
working and car back in Edmonton. Now, once I chase down the missing fuel
pump I will tear the old one out and install the new. What is the best
procedure to remove and install the pump without that special VAG tool for
this purpose? Any help greatly appreciated.

Bob, home from beautiful downtown Hinton.
