For what it's worth, anecdotally: Due to unforseen circumstances
(pothole), I have been running 225/50ZR16 Daytona ZR tires this winter
in Boston.  They have a M+S rating, but have no siping whatsoever.  
On the S4, they have performed just fine.  I haven't gotten stuck, nor 
has the car started sliding without warning or provocation.
Braking performance is truly bad, but going has not been a problem.

These tires, with the rear differential locked, got me out of my 
parking spot this past weekend with no shoveling:

Again, just for what it's worth.  The only reason I'd prefer snow
tires with this car given my usage is for better braking.
