And CH2COOH is?

CH3COOH is acetic acid (active ingredient of vinegar). CH3CH2OH is ethanol
or ethyl alcohol or the active ingredient of all booze. CH3OH is methanol
or wood alcohol. CH3-CHOH-CH3 is isopropanol or isopropyl alcohol. A 70%
solution of isopropyl alcohol in water is called "rubbing alcohol". All
of these are toxic and can result in brain damage, liver damage, etc., and
in excess, death whether taken internally or by inhalation of the
vapors. You are wise to listen to your retired chemist mother-in-law. ;-)
