If the 205/50/16tires are older (hence worn more) than the 205/55/16
tires, there could be a bigger difference in the radius of the tires
than the sizing charts would dictate.

Add to this that the Doc may not be keeping his tire pressures set
correctly, who knows what difference in size there actually is.

I'd go along with first swapping out the tires to eliminate that as a
problem.
