Although there is no Audi content, the principles are all the same.
When did this problem first manifest itself? Did he first notice it when the
rear tires were installed? Did he get some major mechanical work done on
the suspension or brakes? Did he do some off-roading and possibly clog the
sensor up with mud?
Maybe a good friend could help the doctor do a bit of preliminary cleaning and
diagnosis to make sure it isn't the controller?
As a shade tree mechanic I can empathize with the dealer on the estimate.
Minor electrical faults are hard to find. If you quote the customer the worst
case scenario and happen to find a bad connection while you're replacing the
major expensive part, then there is no argument, but if the shop/dealer says:
"Well it may only be $25. to clean the contacts" and then he finds the
controller is bad, the customer may feel he is being shafted.
