[s-cars] Fuel pump running after I turn the car off

Is the fuel pump supposed to do keep running after I turn the car off?  It 
seems to run for about 15-30 seconds after I shut the engine off.  I have 
also heard some type of pump come on in the rear of the car after the car 
has been sitting for hours or even a day or so.  What is this?  Does the 
car try to maintain a specified fuel pressure in the lines.  Inquiring mind 
wants to know.  TIA
