hey mike,
i am by far not the most experienced on the list with this, but my
inclination would be to get a leak-down test and/or a pressure test to
see where the loss is coming from. from there, possibly running a VERY
tight inspection of what everyone else has mentioned.
if it is in fact the head gasket, i would say you are in for a rebuild
of the top-end seal on the motor and can do certain things while in
there. namely, the water pump (has to come off anyway), timing belt
(see above), tensioner pulley, replace w/ race studs and or get into a
port/polish scenario w/ the head if you like, although dave dawson has
recently shown pretty empirically that this is not needed to make even
very high HP numbers. unless you want to suck Hap through your intake
:)
other than that, the standard list of replaceable's in the rebuild is
documented and the wrench will know what those are when he goes through
his good 'ol shop manual. hey, maybe ask keith where to get the best
deals on all those parts as he seems to be the #1 NAmerica orderer of
them as of late. sorry keith, had to say it ;)
sincerely,
matt ludwig.
