The story per my race car driver neighbor:

"The Brian Redman Historic car Nationals, held two weeks ago. This happened
before the cars reached the starting line. The red corvette is proly the
most expensive car in the photo at 1,000,000.00 ........and oh....there's no
insurance for the cars if damaged while racing. Three people went to the
hospital, no serious injuries.
Seems the starter waived off the start 'cause the lead guys weren't lined up
well enough....they slowed to about forty-five but the guys further back
thought the race was on so they throttled up."

The RA start is mid straight just over the crest of a hill that keeps it out
of sight of a bunch of old guys throttling up:/
Still, I'd say the starters got some splainin' to do. Yikes!
