Steve,

The ECU will not always fire the fuel pump for the first little bit while 
cranking.
Seems it expects there to be residual pressure in the lines to enable the 
engine to fire.
Extended cranking, with your foot to the floor while usually get the pump to 
start.

You might just try to jumper the FP to 12 volts and see if there is a 
pressure being made.

yup, that's where we're at now... <sigh>

I really shouldn't read this list. Seems every malady that befalls
someone else's Audi eventually befalls mine.
