Hello Doug.
It's no different in the UK. I stopped using the 'professionals' 10 years
ago after three successive jobs:
- they charged me a lot of money to not fix a clunk on a 1984 80q
- they replaced the clutch on my 80q and it vibrated for ever more
- they didn't tighten up the crank bolt after a T-belt change, so the crank
ate the crank gear key (quite topical, that one).
So, for the last 10 years I have done all my own maintenance and servicing
and managed to nurse my 80q to 185K miles, and a 100 Avant to nearly 300K
miles.
Paul

Glad to hear of your success! You probably saved much more than a few
hundred pounds, - I figure the first repair would cost 400 pounds as they
replaced every coil, then told you you were good to go; when the misfire
still occurred, you'd come back and they would replace both POSs at another
400 pounds!.. Therefore actually fixing the problem, and that's if you're
lucky - of course this is solely based upon my experience with mechanics
here in the states.
