Keith,

 You will have to remove the sunroof to get at the elastic strap that limits
the retraction of the cover. The 'pop' your heard was the strap's clip (bent
wire, as in hog clip) disconnecting from the back of the sunroof. You might
just buy a new strap and be ready to replace it when you do the job. The
clip is easily reattached/replaced, and once you understand the mechanics,
you will treat your sunroof cover with more kindness.
