For what its worth I hear that the 325ixt with sports package has oversized 330 brakes (which are big) and more rear seat room than the sedan.

and for all that, the passat W8, even with a 6-speed manual, is slower
than a 330xi.

i'll bet the 330xi ends up being cheaper to own, when depreciation,
maintenance, and repairs are taken into account.  unfortunately, the only
3-series you can get as a wagon is the 325 (RWD and AWD versions), and
that one's kind of slow.

i ended up buying an '01 S4 avant with 35k miles on it.
