Several years ago I had such an incident. I'd been struggling with the 
intermittent cut-out in my car for several weeks until I finally traced 
it to the top chip creping out of its ZIF socket. That incident has 
taught me a valuable lesson not to ever use ZIFs in cars. ZIFs are good 
in stationary computes in the controlled environment of our houses but 
are going to fail in the vibrating car exposed to a broad range of 
temperatures.

I de-soldered those bastards for which I paid ca.$7 to DigiKey and 
soldered in regular sockets. I also zip-tied  the chips to the sockets 
for a good measure. Never had a problem since.
