Several years ago I had such an incident. I'd been struggling with the
intermittent cut-out in my car for several weeks until I finally traced
it to the top chip creping out of its ZIF socket. That incident has
taught me a valuable lesson not to ever use ZIFs in cars. ZIFs are good
in stationary computes in the controlled environment of our houses but
are going to fail in the vibrating car exposed to a broad range of
temperatures.
I de-soldered those bastards for which I paid ca.$7 to DigiKey and
soldered in regular sockets. I also zip-tied the chips to the sockets
for a good measure. Never had a problem since.
