Six-pack $7.00. Waiting until you install the fuel pump, priceless.

Dave;

Run the tank as low on fuel as possible.
Index the top plate so you can install it in the same position. This will
give you the best chance of having the fuel gauge work properly when you
re-install the float and top plate. The float hangs up unless the top plate
is in exactly the right position - there's not much margin for error.
Use non-sparking tools. Leave the trouble light in the garage - use a
flashlight or other light that won't spark gas fumes.
Work outside or in well ventilated conditions.
Use neoprene gloves to avoid soaking up too much gas through your skin.
The tool should fit into position fairly easily.
Wait until the job is done before killing that six-pack.

Enjoy!

S-gruppees: I have borrowed an "official" fuel pump carrier removal tool
(with the drive "socket" pre-broken so I won't have that worry to concern
me). I have a good idea as to what needs to be done to remove and replace
the existing fuel pump. However, any hints, e.g. how to orient the tool to
hit the three clips the first time, no smoking, etc. etc., would be
appreciated. I am going to replace whatever is in the tank now (VDO,
Pierberg, Bosch???) with a new Bosch 091 G pump to see if I can make my
RS2-based pinging go away. If not, I am moving on the Bosch Motorsport 044
pump - either in the tank or in-line, using the OEM pump as the low pressure
supply pump.
