Oh yes.  When oil pumps go out on vw microbus/early vanagons, they put 300+psi thru the oil filter, which blows out the seal, and the engine goes bybye if customer waits too many seconds...

I also had the above happen on my 81 scirocco rally car.  I was running FL1A filter, blew out the seal first thing in the morning on a couple cold days.  At the time I had a connection at Fram, who told me I was lucky to catch it ("hey 3 filters in 2 days, wtf?").  Trivia from that conversation:  Standard oil filter rubber rings are designed for a max pressure of 300-325psi, at 326 failure rate becomes 99% certainty.
