Bill, this sounds like the dreaded "Pinion bearing failure"... typically only seen on on the UrS4 (92 to 94), so you might have a transmission from a 94 as Audi is famous for blending parts from one year to the next (at least on our S-cars). Fret not... if you can live with the noise it will last a long long time... and you can reduce the noise considerably by overfilling the transmission using a some http://www.militec-1.com/

My 5 speed transmission (95 S6) is making some noise.   My friendly mechanic looked at it today and believes it is the final drive.    It sort of sounds like a bearing noise and when it's cold it clicks.    The noise is the same in any gear or in neutral and when rolling.   

So... I think that means I need to find a transmission.   ;-(    
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to repair it?    Or where to get a used transmission?   

any help would be greatly appreciated.
