After a month of carrying-on and internet searching, I fixed things to my
liking. FWIW, forget trying to locate a new/good used S4 power antenna,
unless you have the patience to search the net/boneyards every day. I ended
up buying a Harada antenna for a 92 jetta ($12) and splicing it into the
original cable. The fit is perfect and a few wire tires keep it located
inside the trunk. The big upgrade was that i just installed Sirius Sat.
radio last night. I was suprised how easy and OEM-like it all went together.
I paid about $150 total for the kit and it works perfect. The antenna sits
nicely on the LR section of the roof, and the wire gets run down the rear
window channel and into the trunk. The wire can be nicely concealed by
carefully cutting some black electrical tape and placing it on top of the
wire and pressing it into the channel. Hard to see unless you look close.
The actual 'head-unit' mounts perfectly to the left of the turnsignal stalk,
just below the RS air vent. Although this unit comes with a cig lighter
adapter, i snipped it off and hardwired the dock to the 10mm B+ terminals
just on the other side of the underdash plate. In all it is easy to install
this very clean. I chose Sirius for a number of reasons, that being that all
the premium stuff XM charges you extra for is free with Sirius, plus i hear
the programming is a bit more diverse. But either way, both should give you
plenty of good listening...
