I would certainly try topping off with trans fluid first and not necessarily
rule out a failed/failing clutch part as being responsible for the clicking
noise. 
That said; I STILL have my old <85k, 5 spd waiting for the first $500
+shipping.  I believe its an 8/95 build date.  Sucker weighs 150lbs, so
shipping could be $$.
