I don't think your puzzlement is odd at all- I've never had any issues
getting the drain plugs off of my Audis as long as I'm the one doing
the oil changes. I think some techs will really crank on the drain
plug, which is totally unnecessary. I snug the plug down and use a new
copper washer every time- you really don't need a lot of torque to
seal the drain plug and I've never had issues with it loosening,
leaking or anything else.

As a counterpoint, I've had lots of problems with drain plugs after
getting a car back from the dealer. Same thing with oil filters.
