Dave;
There are two plastic clips that secure the pump into the basket. If you pop
the clips loose, the pump will lift out of the basket. I'll send you via
personal e-mail a set of photos and a write-up (courtesy Robert Myers).

Subject: [s-cars] Fuel Pump Removal Help Request (please)
Okay. I've tried but I can't undo the Chinese puzzle in the bowels of
fuel tank. Probably doesn't help that my borrowed 3214 fuel pump wrench
is broken (can't use a rachet on it). At this point, I am ready to quit
and button it all back up (tail between legs), buy a new 3214 wrench
and try again in a few weeks. (BUT I know some of you have done this job
without the wrench).
I ran the tank down to the warning light (15 L left) but then I had to
add a bit to get home. So right now the fuel level is just at the top
of the pump carrier. The top of fuel pump that is in there appears to
be white plastic (unless that is part of the carrier). My new in a box
Bosch pump is all black (no metal - all plastic).
For the orientation of the fuel level sender, the black fitting for the
evaporative emissions should be at the 6 PM position. This should pump
the letters VDO (and part numbers) running exactly "north-south".
At this point I am wondering why I can't just unclip something and
remove just the fuel pump and not the carrier.
Oh, yeah, as for hints, a) open fuel tank (filler) to remove vacuum and
b) do something to drain the high pressure line because when you crack
open the banjo fitting you will be "surprised" at how much fuel is in
the line. (Duh).
I hope some Rubic's cube Guru can tell me how to unclip just the pump.
