Try seeing if you can make it click in second gear by shifting bit too
low.  The clicking could be from a dried out front CV joint on the prop
shaft.  If it clicks in second gear as well, I would suspect that this
is the case.

I would certainly try topping off with trans fluid first and not
necessarily
rule out a failed/failing clutch part as being responsible for the
clicking
noise. 
That said; I STILL have my old <85k, 5 spd waiting for the first $500
+shipping.  I believe its an 8/95 build date.  Sucker weighs 150lbs, so
shipping could be $$.
