I had a Miata and ran it without a spare.  I kept a small ($20)
air compressor and fix-a-flat kit in the trunk to save space.
The kit included a rasp to roughen the hole, an insertion tool,
and a few gooey strips of god-knows-what as plugs.  Worked
great the few times I used it (and not on my car!).

My only concern would be a flat in winter, if the rubber plugs
stored in the cold car would work.  Never did test that issue.

Another concern is a hole in the sidewall -- which can't be
fixed.  That's why there is AAA.
