With all this talk about manual transmissions, I just have to ask...

Has anyone considered converting an A6 4.2 from an automatic to a
manual?
Or is there a way to get a V8 manual Quattro other than the new S4?

I totally agree with Taka/Igor/and others.  We own 6 vehicles, 4 are
sticks,
the 2 autos are the A6 because of my wife's shoulder and the '91 F-150
for
towing/home depot runs :)  I have convereted a number of cars from autos
to
manuals because I am such a manual nut.

I thought I was one of a very few that still think that there is no
replacement for a manual transmission if that if what you like. Lots
of people keep saying the RS6 is so great, but the fact that it has an
automatic transmission kills it for me.

The slow shifting, lack of engine braking and no real control of shift
points really makes an automatic a very different driving experience.
Even in an extreme case like a Corvette, there is more than enough
power, handling, brakes, etc., but an automatic vette is still no fun.

Even if most people are slower around a track in a manual 6-spd. 996
turbo, I'd take it over the tiptronic any day.

All this rambling basically saying, go for the manual transmission
allroad, forget the S6.
