I took a test in my '89 200 with, shall we say, an unpopulated catalytic.
It came ohh so very close to passing. It sounds like, at least in one of
the examples you guys were talking about, it was not an IM240 test on the
dyno. That is what I did with the '89. I will say that there is a HUGE
difference in that car between cat and no cat. The boost threshold is
lowered by about 300-400 rpm I would say. Of course that is a single
exhaust with a K26 Turbo so it's kind of apples and oranges.....well maybe
tangerines and oranges :)

Bill, I too have a friend test piping a Stromung. He has a brand new
Stromung cat-section in his basement storage (to make sure the unit stays in
good working condition) with the bubble wrap still on it from when it was
shipped several years ago.

Apparently his RS2 /Uncle Boost equipped car returned zeros all around at
the testing station, everybody, including his distant uncle Ben Franklin,
was impressed with this zero emissions vehicle.

I know the smell that Paulie is referring to, and its especially tasty
during the warm up cycle, from what I hear. His hypothetical situation would
be slightly different, as our friends have Stromungs and he still has a
stock downpipe, and dual cats (not a bad thing).

My understanding is that if you get the cats nice and roasty on a regular
basis this keeps them flowing rather freely (but officer, I was just trying
to to improve the efficiency of my emissions equipment) as everything that
would cause a restriction burns off . So-- dual cats, check, lead sneakers,
check, loose nut behind the wheel, check. I'd say Paul K is all set.
