Actually the quote was for the mechanical portion which sticks slightly
on my car too. They said they ordered them from the fatherland.

Yes, the recall effects the electrical switch which attaches to the back
of
the key lock assembly. I've had several S cars, and it's been replaced
on
every one.
I believe Phil Long doesn't have to "match" your current key, because
they
don't replace to lock assembly, just the electrical switch

Browsing I found there was a recall affecting Ignition Switches for the
S6. Anyone here done this?
NHTSA Campaign ID Number: 96V017000
Recall Date: JAN 29, 1996
Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
Also my dealer, Phil Long in Colo. Springs, quoted around $195 and said
that it would be matched to my current key.

I would definitely drop by a good locksmith and have him take a look.
He
probably wont even notice that it's an S-Car. He'll just fix the
lock.
No sense even talking to the dealer on that one.

I've had some problems with my ignition key 'sticking" on my 95.5 S6
Avant.
The ignition switch has been replaced recently, so I know that's not the
problem.
I've tried injecting graphite with out much noticeable improvement.
Occasionally, it really sticks and my wife calls me because she can't
get
the car started, so to keep peace in the family I need to find a
solution.
The stealer tells me that they can order a new cylinder and lock ($210)
which will require a new key for the ignition and I can keep using the
old
key for the doors and trunk. My mechanic thinks Audi Germany may be
able to
actually set the tumblers to my key code using the VIN. (so we can keep
using a single key) However, the stealer claims that will only work
with a
96 or newer car.
I'd like to know if anyone else has figured out how to address this
problem.
Anyone had any experience with a locksmith rebuilding an old lock to
extend
its life?
Thanks very much,
Robert Welch
